Staff

The Brighton High School Bands are under the direction of Joseph Swinkey, Director of Bands. Mr. Swinkey conducts the Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Concert Band, Scranton MS Jazz Band, and is the Director of the Brighton Marching Band. He serves as assistant to Mrs. Evans in the Scranton MS 8th Grade Band. Mr. Swinkey began his tenure at Bright Area Schools in the Summer of 2024.

Prior to coming to Brighton Area Schools, Mr. Swinkey served as Director of Bands at Monroe High School in Monroe, MI, from 2018-2024. During his tenure at MPS, he conducted all bands at Monroe HS. He taught courses in music theory, a cappella choir, and co-taught the 6th grade beginning band at Monroe Middle School. Mr. Swinkey earned his Bachelor's of Music Education from the Michigan State University College of Music, where he played trumpet in the MSU Concert Band, The Spartan Marching Band, and the Spartan Brass. He is currently working towards a Master's of Music Education from the University of Michigan. His experiences include competitive collegiate a cappella, chamber choir, brass ensemble, and numerous other vocal and brass-related teaching and playing positions. His professional affiliations include the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association, National Association for Music Education, the American Choral Director's Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
